New Camera Apps Discovered In The iOS 4.3 beta 2

With the release of Apple’s iOS 4.3 beta version almost upon us, it is expected that the iPad 2 will more than likely come equipped with both front and back facing cameras.

With the new release of the iOS 4.3 beta 2 version, MacRumors has discovered some new evidence about the new iPads front facing camera. The MacRumors website has found three new iPad apps icons on the new iOS 4.3 Beta 2, these include FaceTime, Camera and Photo Booth. You can view these new iPad app icons in the image below.

The new Camera app will more than likely allow users to take photographs, while there is still uncertainty if the iPad will come with a back camera, this new app will more than likely be used for the front camera only. The Photo Booth app is probably much similar to the Mac OS X Photo Booth application, which gives users the unique ability to take photos and then add various effects or filters to them. The Facetime application will allow users to video conference with other people that are using the same Facetime app, whether that is on the iPad, iPhone or Mac OS.

Until Apple officially unveils its highly anticipated iPad2, we will just have to keep speculating on its features and just hope that it comes with all the wonderful things that we have come to expect from the Apple Company.

Netflix App Drops "Add DVD’S To Que"

The popular movie rental company Netflix has announced that they are dropping their “add to DVD queue” option from all devices that have online streaming capabilities.

These devices include your iPad, iPhone, Xbox, PS3 and any other devices that can stream live videos.

Of course this will not be a big deal to most users, considering that majority of people have already moved to the “streaming only” plan. However, there still remains a large group of people that enjoy subscribing to actual DVD’s when their requested video aren’t available for streaming. Netflix has obviously changed their policies because they are trying to encourage users to become more internet savvy in 2011.

According to a statement from Netflix, “we want to concentrate on offering customers the titles that are available to watch instantly. The company also stated in their blog that by keeping the DVD rental option available, that it complicates the instant watching experience for viewers, thus slowing down your internet streaming feature

Steve Jobs Takes A Temporary Medical Leave From Apple

Apple CEO Steve Jobs sent a letter to all of the Apple employees telling them he will be taking a temporary leave of absence for unknown medical reasons.

In a letter that Jobs sent to his staff, he explains that he needs time away from the company to focus more on his family and his health. Steve Jobs will still be the Apple CEO and is not officially stepping down from Cupertino based company, but he has given Apple COO, Tim Cook, temporary control of the company.

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve

This isn’t the first time that Steve Jobs has stepped down from the company for medical reasons, in 2009 the Apple CEO underwent a liver transplant.

The Beatles Have Sold Over 5 Million Songs In 2 Months

After only being in the iTunes store for about 2 months, The Beatles have sold over 5 million songs and over a million album downloads.

These statistics were recently brought to light in an interview from an Apple Representative with The Loop magazine.

The report stated that the most popular Beatles song downloaded is “Here Comes the Sun”, which sales for about a $1.29. Also, the Apple rep stated that the Beatles Album “Abbey Road” is the most popular album being sold, which sales for $12.99.

The Beatles catalog recently showed up in the iTunes store just a few months ago, after the negotiations have taken around seven years. There has been obvious beef between the company that owns the rights to the Beatles “Apple Corps” and “Apple, Inc”, and the two companies have even battled in court regarded trademark related issues.

The Beatles songs are different from most artists in the iTunes store because they receive more royalties from the sales of their songs than others.

iPad 2 SKUs Appear on Best Buy's Website?

According to a report that I just read on PadGadget, Best Buy is rumored to have imported three new Apple products into their website with generic SKUS called "Apple iPad SKU WiFi”.
These tree mysterious products appeared yesterday, all having different named SKU’s than that of the previous iPad. While some critics think that these new listings are simply the result of an inventory error from Best Buy, the chances are better that the electronics company is simply creating place holders for the up and coming iPad 2.
Even though Best Buy confirmed the legitimacy of these three new database products, they have since been removed from the BestBuy.com website. While the listings didn’t prove much details in regards to the new iPads, but they didn’t show that the products were WiFi only and that they would cost anywhere from $599.99 to $699.99.

ThinkGeeks arcade game has been released for the iPad

If you did not have a motive to purchase an iPad before, CES 2011 ThinkGeek has fixed that.
Beginning as an April fool’s joke, a fake miniature arcade game was imagined to hold an iPad connecting it to a joystick and its buttons, which are common to a retro arcade game.
The idea of the iCade was such a success; it has been now made into a reality. ThinkGeek teamed up with ION Audio and Atari to bring the iCade to market. The desktop iPad cradle was officially unveiled at CES 2011. The iCade’s controls connect to the iPad via Bluetooth so it is just as easy as gently placing your iPad into the cabinet and “Insert Coin”.

Atari will have classic games available via the App Store with iCade support built in – including Asteroids. In addition an easy to implement API will be made available to developers allowing iCade support to be added to almost any game.

The iCade is priced at $99.00 US.

iPad Screen Lock Button Making A Comeback?

It would appear that Apple has been listening to the complaints because according to MacRumors, Apple plans on bringing the screen orientation lock back by giving users the option to enable it in the new iOS 4.3 beta version. With so many iPad users complaining about this issue, it has been dubbed one of the dumbest iPad moves in 2010.

According to reports, the company has released their new iOS 4.3 beta version to developers, and it will be available to the public sometime in the next few months. The MacRumors website reports some of the features found in the new iOS 4.3 beta version include the ability to change the functionality of the iPads switch to a screen orientation lock or a mute switch, which I know will you guys happy!

More iPad 2 Rumors

Similar to the launch of the original iPad, the iPad 2 is expected be released in the United States first, while other countries might have to wait as long as July.

According to the reports, the iPad 2 will originally be sold exclusively through Apple stores. While Apple retailers such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Amazon will have to wait until summer ends before getting the rights to sell Apple’s newest tablet pc.

The MacNotes website also confirmed most of the rumors that have been circulating around lately, such as the iPad 2 will include both front and rear based cameras along with integration of a USB port. The device is also said to have a pseudo-retina display that will offer a higher resolution display than that of the current iPad.

Rumors also state that the company that assembles all of Apple’s devices, Foxconn, is adjusting their factory’s lines in order to handle the mass production of the new iPad. Rumors suggest that Foxconn will start producing the iPad 2 as early as next month.

Of course these rumors are solely speculation and until Apple officially announces the specifications and release date of the iPad, these rumors are really all we have to go on.

You can purchase the Hyundai Equus for around $58k, but before you do this I definitely recommend downloading the free application from the Apple store.

The TiVo iPad App Should Be Available This Month

A while back we wrote about the soon to be released TiVo app for the Apple iPad, and it seems it’s getting closer to being launched.

The app is packed with a sleek looking design that will give users full control over their TiVo set-top boxes. The TiVo Company recently tweeted that they are almost ready to release the iPad app, and it should be launched before January ends.

This new TiVo app will give users an easy way to search through content, view guides, as well as scheduling and managing recordings, get recommendations and even view an actor’s entire resume via the IMDB database. Grocery Shop From Home With The Peapod iPad App

If you’re always busy working and never have time to go out and do things, then there is a new grocery shopping application for the iPad that will make your life a little easier.

Even though a lot of people find their future sole mates while searching for groceries at the super market, for most of us it’s just a hassle that we could definitely do without. Well now of the most popular online grocery stores, Peapod, is making it easier to skip the isle browsing at the grocery store with the creation an iPad application that let you shop from home.

The brand new Peapod iPad app will allow grocery shoppers to purchase their products online and promptly schedule a time for delivery. Shoppers can easily browse for items by different brand names, product types or UPC codes while easily adding them to their online shopping carts.

The Peapod app also gives customers the ability to use the Apple iPad to check through past purchases which gives users an easy way to add previously purchased items to their current shopping lists. There are also some cool new features integrated into the new Peapod iPad app, such as a viewing option that allows you to see your selected items in a list or grid like format.

So if you’re a grocery shopper in one of the 23 different locations that Peapod has store in, then I would definitely recommend using this grocery shopping application. The application is completely free to download and delivery costs usually run about $8 to $10, but you do have to purchase at least $60 worth of food.

Apple May Soon Do Away With Their Restocking Fees

Have you ever bought an expensive computer or television from your local electronics store only to return it and pay the expensive restocking fee?

These restocking fees usually run anywhere from 10-20% and stores charge it to their customers when they return any opened item. Almost every electronics retailer in the country, including Apple, charge these ridiculous fees.

Well there are now new reports that seem to suggest that Apple is changing their return policy and doing away with these restocking fees. Apple stores currently charge 10% on all returned items, but as of tomorrow, this might not be the case. Customer might soon be able to return their Macbooks, iPhones and iPads to the Apple store and receive full refunds.

Apple may be changing up their return policy due to pressure from the US government. U.S. Senator Charles Shumer has been pressuring the Trade Commission to determine whether or not companies should be able to charge restocking fees, especially since most retailers don’t inform their customers of these fees prior to them purchasing it.

Although Apple’s return policy remains unchanged as of today, these rumors obviously started from somewhere, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Apple update very soon.

iPad 2 Cases Are Already Hitting The Market

Even though there is no official word from Apple to when the iPad 2 will be officially launched, that is still not stopping some companies from making accessories for it.

One mobile accessory maker, Dexim, is stating that they have designed a case specially made to meet the specifications for the iPad 2.

The Dexim iPad 2 case comes with a rear facing camera hole that is located at the back of the case, along with spacer for the devices speaker. The mock-up from Dexim seems to be a bit thinner than that of the first generation iPad model, and the home button is located closer to the bottom. Also, the case features a fully functional Bluetooth keyboard that will basically turn your Apple tablet into a fully fledged clamshell type laptop computer.

The case has an interesting design and it is actually quite similar to what other companies’ iPad 2 cases are looking like, even though some people are questioning the legitimacy of it. For beginners, Apple has not even come out and announced the release of the iPad 2.

While companies come out with cases for the non-existent iPad 2, there is still no proof to what exactly the iPad 2 will even look like. So please don’t take these companies’ predictions too serious, especially until Apple gives the official word about the next generation iPad’s release.

The iPad has taken no attention away from the Kindle

Even with its colors, sleek design and fancy apps, the iPad does not destroy the Kindle. In fact, both devices will have vigorous growth in 2011.

According to a new report issued by Forrester tablet, computer sales should skyrocket this year well over 130 percent from the 10.3 million units sold in 2010 to 24 million in 2011.

While the tablet category is roasting hot, Kindle e-readers have not been tossed aside as many predicted. Forrester expects that the number of e-readers in the market will surge by 50 percent in 2011 to 15.5 million units.

Survey data that was released yesterday by J.P. Morgan, found that in December brand awareness for Amazon’s Kindle is at 76 percent (versus 84 percent for the iPad), and 28 percent of survey respondents said they either own a Kindle or plan to buy one in the next 12 months.

Most interestingly, J.P. Morgan found that 40 percent of iPad owners also own a Kindle, and that another 23 percent of iPad owners plan to buy a Kindle in the next year.

The New Politico iPad App Is A Must Have

The company that brings you breaking political stories, Politico, has just launched a new iPad application that is getting great reviews from its users.

Politico seems to be taking a different avenue with this new application, while most companies are trying to make their apps more complex with the integration of photos and video features, Politico is focusing more on the actual articles.

The Politico application is very user friendly and the front page is presented in a neat manner, with the featured story being the main attraction. The other stories surround the main article, similar to what you would see in a paper newspaper. While each of Politico’s articles contains at least one photograph, the front page does not display any them.

Politico is one of the major new sources for many breaking stories in the political world and is frequently referenced from large news companies. Each article within their iPad app reads much similar to a newspaper. There are two columns per page and users can easily swipe front left to right to navigate through them. The app also has fully functional social networking plugins that allow you to share the Politico app’s articles on facebook, twitter and even email.

This application is a good source for political news, however, it is far from perfect. While testing out the Politico app it crashed on me several times, this hopefully will be fixed soon with the next update. On the contrary, the app is beautiful in design and offers users a wonderful reading experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about politics.

In particular, there seems to be many apps for the iPad that allow you to take notes and offer new and innovative ways of doing so. However, there are so many iPad apps at the moment that actually choosing a good app for taking notes might seem like a bit of a hassle and you will more than likely have no clue which is a good one or not. One of the latest apps in the app store is an app named Notability and it offers an entirely new way of making notes and keeping information.

The overall idea behind this app is that it will allow you to take notes on your iPad, however, there are many more features than simply taking notes and there are a variety of things built into the app that will allow you to take notes more easily and find the things you actually want to know in a much better way. This app really makes a pen and paper seem like something from the past.

Nightstand Central for iPad

There are so many applications for the iPad and there are a huge variety of apps that are actually preinstalled from Apple which allow you to do all of the basic kinds of things. However, there seems to be a different app for different things when it comes to these apps. For example, there is an app for alarm clocks and there is a separate app for weather .This might be quite annoying for some users a large percentage of the time, you might want all of this information in one place and on the screen at one time. You might also want a different alarm tone to the standard Apple in built tone. If this is the case, then it’s possible that you have been looking for iPad apps that can actually supply this for you and if you have, you might have stumbled upon Nightstand Central for iPad.

The design of the Articles application has been exceptionally well executed and has a very clean and easy to use design which allows you to use the application with great ease form the moment that you download it. The great thing about the design of the application is that it is very focused on the knowledge side of things and this prevented the designers from cluttering the app with useless design features. The app is very plain and simple but this is certainly the way it should be as it allows you to focus on the information that you are looking for and not on some sort of

Review: SyncPad for iPad

In this modern age, there are a lot of people that like to work from home and that like to share ideas with people that are quite far away from them. This is something that is now possible with the internet and with the Apple iPad; there is a whole range of new things that you can do. SyncPad for the iPad is a fantastic application that will actually allow you to share your ideas with people anywhere in the world using the internet and is a great idea for those designers and business people that can’t always be in the same room for a business meeting.

We have seen a few of these sorts of applications for the iPad in the past, but most of them will require the users to sit just a few feet from each other in order to connect together. This is pretty useless as this will mean that there really isn’t any point. SyncPad actually allows you to create a virtual whiteboard on your iPad device and will allow you to connect with any other user in the world using the internet. This means that you can both contribute to the thoughts and ideas process behind any good design or business meeting.

The goal is to fit the colored blocks into a 3D shape, but they must be fit in from all sides. You think you’ve got it, then you rotate the shape to see that you’ve got a couple blocks floating out in space. You can choose from

PBS creates Antiques Roadshow game app - MacNN

PBS creates Antiques Roadshow game appupdated 06:10 pm EST, Mon January 10, 2011Adds iPhone, iPod Touch compatibility to iPad app

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has expanded their iPad PBS app to the iPhone and iPod Touch -- now a universal app and simply called PBS -- and has now ventured into the "game" category with an app based on their hit program Antiques Roadshow. The AR game lets players on iOS devices virtually collect, appraise and bid on real antiques that appear on the program, with new collectibles from different cities made available periodically.

The Antiques Roadshow app ($3) features hundreds of genuine antiques with their actual values, and includes dozens of challenges from locations around the United States. The app has detailed descriptions and pictures players can zoom in on, Facebook Connect compatibility to enable posting players' progress, a "collector's log" and the ability to use points earned to unlock a "free play" mode that includes more antiques, including rare items.

Last month, PBS launched an iPad-exclusive app featuring over 300 hours of current video, listings and previews from local stations, and has now created a version of the same app geared for iPhone and iPod Touch. The free app includes full-length updated shows such as Frontline and the PBS Newshour, Circus and more. Segments from other shows, such as Austin City Limits song performances, are also available. The app can also act as a schedule guide for whatever local station a user happens to be near, and favorite shows and episodes can be "bookmarked" for easy retrieval. Video segments can be shared with friends on Facebook, Twitter or via email, and the app supports direct purchasing of shows or seasons. Viewing reminders can be synced with iCal so users are alerted to upcoming shows.

Both the iPad-specific and iOS universal versions of the PBS app are free. The Antiques Roadshow game is available for all iOS devices running iOS 3.0 or later (the iPad version requires iOS 3.2 or later). PBS also offers a Newshour-specific iPhone app, apps related to National Public Radio, and a host of children's apps tied to their popular kids' website, PBSkids.org.

iPad App Review: Agendas

Agendas for the iPad is a new application that was released at the beginning of December. Agendas is an application for business users and so far, it looks like it is doing pretty well in the app store. The idea of the iPad app is that it will allow you to create your own agendas for meetings that you are expected to be attending. The applcation provides you a great way of creating your agendas and it also has a range of other features that are designed to make your business life and your meetings a lot easier and will allow them to flow a lot better.

Planning a meeting can be hard work and you will find that you will have a pile of scribbled down notes that are illegible to even yourself. This is where the Agendas iPad application comes in as it has a clean interfere that will allow you to create your agendas on your iPad. The design of the application is pretty straightforward and there is nothing fancy about it, however, it does do the job that it was designed to do and the app is extremely easy to use. The interface of the app is extremely clean meaning that you can focus on what you need to focus on in your agenda, rather than the cluttered interface of many other business applications out there. All of the buttons that you will need are located in the places that you would expect, meaning that you can get on with creating your agenda.

My Data Usage Pro iPad Review

One of the problems that you have probably faced, especially if you are currently on a contract with a mobile phone operator, is that you often have no clue as to how much of your download limit you have used per month. The Apple iPads have now started to be released on a contract and this problem is now being faced for these devices as it is for the iPhone. Luckily, there is an iPad App designed that will allow you to keep track of your data usage and make sure that you do not go over it and have to endure one of those huge bills from the network operator.

Data usage is a big problem for most people and most of the contracts that are currently available for the iPad will have a monthly data limit. What the My Data Usage Pro applcation for the iPad actually allows you to is to keep a check on how much of your data allowance you have actually used. The application has been designed to be extremely simple and it simply fulfils the job that it has been made to do without any unnecessary extra features. The design of the app is very straight forward and setting up the application is as easy as you could imagine. All you have to do in order to get the application working is to actually input the amount of data that you are allowed to use every month and then the application will do the rest of the work for you; letting you know if you reach your limit or are about to exceed it.

SnagFilms Brings Free Documentaries to IPad - PC World

Skype Adds Video-over-3G Capabilities to Its IPhone App

The company released its new application last week. Some of the more prominent documentaries featured in the app-Super Size Me and Confessions of a Superhero among them-have already been available to iPad users via the Hulu Plus and Netflix apps. (But some lesser-known flicks, like Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa, aren't even otherwise available on DVD; you can see a complete list of current titles here, and the company promises to add films to the iPad library over time.) Unlike the other services, however, SnagFilms is completely free, albeit ad-supported by American Express's Members Project.

The SnagFilms app lets users queue up films for later viewing. Film buffs can share the movies via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter, and they can also buy the film from iTunes for offline viewing on any iOS device. (See the video below for a demo of the app.)

The company is giving away a 16GB iPad in conjunction with the app launch. SnagFilms is compatible with iPads running iOS 3.2 or later.

iPad App Review - Sticky Memos

Sticky memos are something that a lot of people have used for many years in their daily lives in order to help them to remember things. However, there are a lot of problems with sticky memos in real life including the fact that they are always getting lost or misplaced and the fact that you have to buy more as soon as you have run out. As well as this, it is using unnecessary amounts of paper and having a negative effect on the environment. Now, you can use your iPad in order to solve the problems that are associated with sticky memos by downloading the sticky memos iPad app. Simple iPad apps are sometimes the best and this application is a perfect example of this.

The Sticky Memos iPad application is basically an iPad app that turns your iPad into a note board. The application has actually been designed to look a lot like a note board and the background of the application is similar to the cork board material that you see on a real life note board. This really adds to the overall look of the application and makes the application look really appealing. On the note board, you will be able to create virtual sticky memos that you will then be able to attach to the note board. These sticky memos have been designed to look the same as real life sticky memos and there are a variety of colours and fonts that you are able to write in.

Awesome Note for iPad

Awesome note for iPad is a revolutionary new application for the iPad as it actually combines all the features of a to-do application with the features of a note taking application. There are a lot of iPad apps that offer both of these services but they are both separate from each other. This application puts them both together into a beautifully designed application that will actually allow you to manage your life a lot more easily. This app really allows you to get the things down on your iPad that you need to remember and it allows you to do this quickly and easily.
Awesome notes for iPad is a really great idea for an application and it has a range of amazing features that work really well. The application itself looks absolutely fantastic and it has been designed with the user in mind, making it one of the easiest to use iPad applications with the highest amount of features that we have seen for quite a while. The application is designed in a user friendly way and it is also quite colourful in its design. The application can be used in any orientation and ever part of the application is colour coded which allows you to use the application as easily as possible. There is a fantastic calendar for your to-do lists which opens up to explore tonnes of details on your items. It really has been designed with the user in mind which is a rare quality for an iPad app to have.

Intelligent Life: iPad app review - Econsultancy (blog)

It is good to be able to click and listen to the music referred to, though the app could go further by linking to iTunes or somewhere else where users can actually purchase it. The same principle also applies to any other products featured in the magazine, something which could prove to be a useful revenue stream.

Conclusion

Rather than simply repurposing the content for the iPad, the developers of this app have at least focused on the platform and adjusted the content to it, and considered how people will use the app.

Other publishers, such as The Independent with its 'i' app, have simply rushed out apps without enough thought for the iPad user experience, and with little or no interactivity. This is not the way to do it.

Publishers developing iPsd apps need to look at the iPad's capabilities, what users expect, and how they can use their content to take advantage of this to provide a compelling experience.

Intelligent Life is one of the better iPad magazine apps I have seen, and it has created an app which is easy to navigate, though it could provide more interactive content, and perhaps make more of it.

SkyFire Web Browser Review

App Developer: Skyfire Labs Inc.

There is no doubting that the iPad has completely revolutionized the way that a lot of people work and enjoy games on mobile devices, but there is also a couple of major drawbacks to the device. One of the problems that people actually face when it comes to the iPad is that they are unable to play flash content on the device. This can be a big problem as there is a lot of flash content available on the internet including many games and advertisements on websites. Until recently, there was no way of viewing the flash content on the device until the SkyFire iPad app came along and made it all possible.

The idea behind the SkyFire application is that it is another web browser for the iPad. It was first made available on the iPhone but following the success, it has been made available for the iPad too. The main idea of the web browser is that it will allow you to be able to view flash content on the device, although it does have a lot of other features as well.

Kindle App Gets Side-loading, Background Downloading - PC World

Skype Adds Video In New iOS App

Perhaps the most notable addition in the update is the support for side-loading of content into the Kindle app. You can now add compatible files into the Kindle library from Mail attachments or other apps that support the iOS feature that allows you to open files in other apps. In addition, you can now drag compatible files to the Kindle app via iTunes, when your iOS device is connected to a Mac or PC, by clicking on the Apps tab, scrolling down to the list of apps with file-transfer support, clicking on the Kindle app, and then dragging files into the window to the right.

In terms of file compatibility, it appears that the Kindle app's support matches that of the Kindle hardware itself: it supports the Mobipocket format (files ending in .mobi and some files ending in .prc), but not the more common epub format. This feature means that you can now download files from Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive, and other online sources, and copy them to the Kindle app on your iOS device.

One of the less-known features of iOS 4's multitasking is the ability for apps to continue downloading even after they've been closed. According to Amazon, Kindle 2.5 will finish downloading your books even if you switch to a different app.

Other minor changes to the app include support for better image zooming and a new book indicator. The app's icon has also been modified to emphasize the word Kindle and remove the word Amazon.

The Kindle app lets iOS users read Kindle books and shop at the Kindle Store, which contains over 775,000 titles. The app also includes a built-in dictionary, search features, and customizable background color and font size. Kindle requires iOS 3.0 or later.

The Power of Peel

Are you sick of sifting through the endless, boring TV Guide grid? Do you need a more effective way to figure out the good things that are on and to find new shows of interest? Peel is an entertainment app that takes into account your location and TV service provider and delivers a whole new guide to TV. Not only does it present you with separate listings for shows, movies, and sports and sort options for genres, but it also delivers episode summaries, cover art, viewing times, and channel information. Furthermore, it shows you only what is actually available for you to watch on regular and premium channels, provides a sleek and simple search interface, and allows you to view time slots for up to a week ahead. Finally, what makes the app stand out from other TV guide apps is that it takes into account what you repeatedly show interest in so that it can highlight your favorites and tailor recommendations to fit your wants and needs — you’ll never miss out on the shows you love AND you can find more to fuel your entertainment addictions! Peel exposes a whole new layer to TV experience.

Beat The Traffic HD iPad App

Ten years ago, I thought MapQuest was the greatest time-saving innovation to hit the internet. No longer did you have to stop by the gas station, pull out an old treasure map, or draw out directions on napkins. All you needed to do was go online, type in where you needed to go, look up directions, print out the map and voila – instant directions. Today, in the age of iPhones, Androids, and the power of yesteryear’s computers in our hands, maps and traffic information is all accessible in seconds. Which begs the question, if we can get all our traffic information from our phones, do we need it on our iPads?

Beat The Traffic HD comes from the developers over at Triangle Software. Beat the Traffic is a route planning service and traffic info service available online at the Triangle Software official website, on an iPhone app, and also available on the iPad.

In addition to pulling in standard traffic times, delays, and traffic speeds highlighted in green/red/yellow, Beat The Traffic HD also provides detailed information on what’s causing traffic. Whether it’s local construction, an injury accident, or road closures – Beat the Traffic HD offers additional insights to help you plan out your driving routes.

All this information ultimately helps you plan out your daily routes to work or school. But whether this is a necessity for the iPad is another question.

Most recently, the folks at Triangle Software updated the Beat the Traffic ad to replace half the user interface with advertisements and upsells. Along the entire top portion of the screen, you’ll find and large banner advertisement. While all alongside the bottom is every upsell and upgrade imaginable.

For an app that provides traffic updates, the recent changes to the app add far too many interrupting features for this app to be useful. If you happen to have a iPhone, Android, or any other smartphone – just stick with your Google Maps app for traffic info. There’s just far too much clutter and distractions for the Beat the Traffic App to be worth your while.

Urbanspoon For iPad App

Urbanspoon, one of the first apps ever developed for the iPhone is now available on the iPad. The popular restaurant suggestion app is almost an exact adaptation of it’s sister iPhone version. Except on the iPad, the extra screen real estate allows users to view a live-updating map in addition to the slot machine function. With Urbanspoon, find restaurants in your area and sort the listings by price, cuisine, or neighborhood. If you’re feeling spontaneous, simply hit the ‘spin’ button and Urbanspoon will randomly choose a restaurant for you.

Completely free for the iPad, the Urbanspoon app loads smoothly, experiences few crashes, and manages to help suggest restaraunts without bombarding you with advertisements or sponsored reviews.

Cooking Made Easy (and Sightly)

With countless feasts, holiday parties, and get-togethers upon us, there is no time like the present to learn how to cook up some magic. Even if you’ve never spent more than a few minutes in the kitchen, there are many apps that can help turn cooking from a dreaded, daunting task into an easy, enjoyable activity. The Photo Cookbook has two of the best cooking apps for the iPhone and iPad — Quick & Easy (for recipes to be made in 30 minutes or less, split into categories of Meat, Fish, Vegetarian, and Desserts) and Baking (for delicious, baked treats, split into categories of Cakes/Traybakes, Pastries, Small Cakes & Cookies, and Breads). Both of these apps guide you step-by-step through awesome recipes. What makes them so great, however, is that the directions are also presented through clear, detailed pictures, so if the recipe jargon is a bit daunting for you, the recipes show you as well as tell you exactly what you need to be doing. Everything you see in the pictures is what you should see in front of you, so you don’t have to wait until everything is all done to realize if you’ve made a mistake or made a masterpiece. It’s like having your own chef tutor, showing you the ways, turning you into a master of the kitchen in no time.

Words With Friends HD Free iPad App

It looks like Scrabble, it feels like Scrabble, but it’s Words With Friends! The popular iPhone game that lets friends and strangers challenge each other to a series of turned-based literati duels is now available for free on the iPad. While developers NewToyInc. had already released a premium ad-free paid version for $2.99 in the App Store, the latest version lets you play the game for free so long as you open yourself up to a few advertisements here and there.

If you’ve never played the game, the game is pretty much Scrabble sans a few changes to avoid a direct copy of the classic board game. The only difference is really where the bonuses (double letter score, double word score, triple letter score and triple word score slots) are placed at different parts on the board. The game is incredibly addicting and lets you find your friends either through their user name, Facebook, or Twitter information. I don’t believe there’s a maximum to the amount of games you can have going at any point. For myself, I have at least 10 games going on at any point.

Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD Lite iPad App

Take the combination of Angry Birds, Little Big Planet on PS3 and maybe a few old Donkey Kong Country levels on Super NES and you have Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD Lite. Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD Lite is a great physics puzzle game for the iPad recently released by Backflip Studios. The Lite version includes about ten tutorial levels to help new users become accustomed to the game’s various gameplay mechanics. After the tutorial there are 20 full challenging levels before the end of the demo.

The goal of each level is to fire the fewest ragdolls through obstacles and hit a target to complete the round. Obstacles can range from levers that open doors to teleporting platforms which send the ragdoll across to other sides of the screen. Unlike Angry Birds or other physics games, this app allows you to continue on with a level for as many shots of the Ragdoll as you’d like. The combination of all these obstacles keeps the levels fresh and unique.

The physics of everything in this game shows the polish that developers have put into it. Altering your shot-speed, angle and other factors are the keys to success in the levels. The way in which the ragdoll can interact with the surroundings makes for many opportunities to better your score, adding to the overall replay value.

The full version of Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD can be purchased from the iTunes store for $4.99

Google Mobile iPad App

FreeiPadApps.net Rating: 70/1001 Reivew

If you’re one of the millions who have integrated their online persona with all of Google’s software like me, then having the Google Mobile App is another extension to help stay connected. The app has been updated to better use the iPad screen.

Standard Google functions are available for the iPad version of this app. A user has the ability to log into multiple GMail accounts. You’re allowed the option to select whether or not you would like to have push notifications sent for any inbox or calendar, which can be actually a nuisance if your accounts are synced to the default Mail app. One great option is to have a time range where sound is disabled from notifications, which is great if you leave your iPad on overnight but don’t want to hear a ring-tone for every e-mail throughout the night.

Since many of Google’s services are offered through mobile web apps, no Google products such as GoogleDocs or Picasa can be found in the app. What is convenient is a page with all the mobile app offerings from Google, which is like a

Instapaper: Reading Done Right

With the spread of technology enabling a growing amount of stories, articles, and blogs to be called to our attention, it is hard to ensure we will have enough time to read everything that piques our interest, especially considering already busy schedules. That’s where Instapaper comes in. When using your iPhone, if you come across something that you’d love to read but just don’t have the time to devote to it, you can send it to Instapaper, which will save up to 500 texts for later revisiting (note: send it to the Instapaper website, and this number becomes unlimited). This applies to e-mails, blogs, articles, and a number of other written pieces that can be encountered in over iPhone 135 apps. Furthermore, whatever you download is available to read offline, so you don’t have to worry about connections (or airplanes or 3G capabilities) ruining your spare free moments. Furthermore, Instapaper includes many options to optimize your reading experience, dictionary lookups, the ability to preview articles without leaving the app, article sharing capabilities via Twitter, Tumblr and e-mail, folders, and many other features that enable you to fully immerse yourself into much anticipated pieces. Even if you haven’t found anything save-worthy throughout the day, Instapaper gives you Editor’s Picks to browse through, so you can see plenty of suggested and notable reads. Instapaper allows an easy, no-excuses way stimulate your brain, keep up with the important, newsworthy, and fun occurrences in life, and read what you want or need to…just on your own time!

Revolutionary Resolutions

With 2011 just two days away, it’s time to start thinking about what you want the new year to bring and making those resolutions (if you haven’t already). All My New Year Resolutions 2011 is an app that can not only help you keep track of your goals for the coming year, but can also enable you to record and share your progress in the process. The app allows you to add as many resolutions as you wish to make, create events and comments for each resolution (i.e. to keep you on track, focused, and motivated), set dates and reminders in your calendar to ensure you’re on the right course, and share your endeavors (and successes) with friends and family over Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, text messages, and more. An added bonus: the app includes cute emoticons that you can add each time you update your resolution-in-progress, showing exactly how you feel about your moment-to-moment accomplishments. With all these awesome features, All My New Year Resolutions 2011 promises that the new year will not only bring a new you, but more importantly a whole lot of support along the way.

App of the Year: Angry Birds

Although 2010 has seen the rise of many notable apps, I have to give the ultimate prize to Angry Birds. While I hate to praise a game, given the existence of more meaningful or productive apps, Angry Birds certainly deserves it. Even though it was technically released late in 2009, the past year has seen the cute little avengers take the App Store by storm, launching their way consistently into the top spots. The ratings alone are an indicator of Angry Birds’ greatness, with 7000 5-star ratings and a 4.5 star average rating across tallies from 9000 reviewers — and that’s just on the iPhone platform. Angry Birds has seen paralleled success from other devices, like the Droid, and seems to be taking over the smartphone sphere. Furthermore, there are numerous apps devoted to playing and praising Angry Birds, not to mention all the Angry Birds seasonal variations. Every person I know (myself included) who has tried Angry Birds simply cannot put it down, forming an obsession with launching the birds at the precisely right angles and make them do their tricks at the exact right moments in order to kill the evil pig monsters and capture back the eggs. Finally, I think it’s safe to say that no other app has spawned potential movie deals — yes some apps stemmed from or were based on movies, but there are talks of Angry Birds becoming one. In short, no app has made an entrance like Angry Birds, with the flawless functionality, superbly addicting gameplay, unique graphics, and smart story-line to get the players properly hooked. I would go so far as to say that Angry Birds is not just a kickass game, it’s a revolution. Here’s to Angry Birds, the best app to surface in 2010.

Top Trends in 2010

 Loading ...

2010 was a big year for iPhone apps, as it saw more than 300,000 active apps in the App Store. From these, many noteworthy trends emerged that will undoubtedly continue to change the iPhone (and iPad, iPod) experience. Here are some of the best:

UPDATE: Mobiola Web Camera

Recently, I posted a review of Mobiola Web Camera, an awesome app that turns your iPhone into essentially a portable, wireless, high-quality web camera for your computer. Well, now there’s even more big news: Mobiola Web Camera has added audio support, so you can use it as a wireless video headset as well. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the video capabilities of Mobiola Web Camera must be worth millions — which you can now verbally share through the app. Forget FaceTime, Mobiola Web Camera is the future of video chatting, and with its new audio functions, is making face-to-face communication easier than ever.

OpenTable For iPad App

Popular restaurant reservation website OpenTable has created an iPad version of their iPhone app. OpenTable is a convenient service for diners to make free restaurant reservations online at participating restaurants across the nation. The site also provides the ability for members to review and rate restaurants.

All of the functionality of the site can be found as a part of the app. Users can look up restaurants by featured metropolitan areas, check available times for certain party sizes, and confirm reservations. What is most useful for this being on the iPad is the ability to use location-based search for nearby restaurants. Users can search the surrounding location for immediate timeslots of restaurants. Each restaurant page also has user reviews to help with the decision. For some businesses, full menus have been uploaded so a user can also browse for food choices before deciding to make a reservation.

If you already have an OpenTable account then you can log in and have your profile sync to the app. You can view past reservations as well as favorite restaurants, which is definitely very handy and convenient if you frequently use OpenTable for dining reservations. Unfortunately you aren’t able to add any new reviews to restaurants through the App.
