PBS creates Antiques Roadshow game app - MacNN

PBS creates Antiques Roadshow game appupdated 06:10 pm EST, Mon January 10, 2011Adds iPhone, iPod Touch compatibility to iPad app

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has expanded their iPad PBS app to the iPhone and iPod Touch -- now a universal app and simply called PBS -- and has now ventured into the "game" category with an app based on their hit program Antiques Roadshow. The AR game lets players on iOS devices virtually collect, appraise and bid on real antiques that appear on the program, with new collectibles from different cities made available periodically.

The Antiques Roadshow app ($3) features hundreds of genuine antiques with their actual values, and includes dozens of challenges from locations around the United States. The app has detailed descriptions and pictures players can zoom in on, Facebook Connect compatibility to enable posting players' progress, a "collector's log" and the ability to use points earned to unlock a "free play" mode that includes more antiques, including rare items.

Last month, PBS launched an iPad-exclusive app featuring over 300 hours of current video, listings and previews from local stations, and has now created a version of the same app geared for iPhone and iPod Touch. The free app includes full-length updated shows such as Frontline and the PBS Newshour, Circus and more. Segments from other shows, such as Austin City Limits song performances, are also available. The app can also act as a schedule guide for whatever local station a user happens to be near, and favorite shows and episodes can be "bookmarked" for easy retrieval. Video segments can be shared with friends on Facebook, Twitter or via email, and the app supports direct purchasing of shows or seasons. Viewing reminders can be synced with iCal so users are alerted to upcoming shows.

Both the iPad-specific and iOS universal versions of the PBS app are free. The Antiques Roadshow game is available for all iOS devices running iOS 3.0 or later (the iPad version requires iOS 3.2 or later). PBS also offers a Newshour-specific iPhone app, apps related to National Public Radio, and a host of children's apps tied to their popular kids' website, PBSkids.org.
